Lifting straps and power grips solve a similar problem: your hands may fatigue before the muscles you are trying to train. But they do not feel or function exactly the same, and the better choice depends on the exercise and the purpose of the session.
What are lifting straps?
Lifting straps wrap around your wrist and then around the bar. Once tightened, they increase your connection to the bar during demanding pulling movements such as deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts and rows.
The IronHybrid Lifting Straps use a polyester construction with a textured silicone surface to increase friction and provide additional grip support during heavy pulls.
What are power grips?
Power grips use an extended palm section that sits between your hand and the bar. Instead of winding a long strap around the bar several times, you place the palm section over the bar and secure your grip around it.
Our Leather Power Grips use an extended leather palm and adjustable wrist fastening for a quick setup on deadlifts, rows, shrugs and other pulling exercises.
Lifting straps vs power grips at a glance
| Feature | Lifting straps | Power grips |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Wrap around the bar | Place palm section over the bar |
| Best suited to | Heavy pulling and repeated strength sets | Fast setup and frequent transitions between pulling sets |
| Feel | More wrapped-in connection | More direct palm-to-bar interface |
| Grip training effect | Reduces how much grip limits the set | Also reduces grip demand during the set |
Which is better for deadlifts?
For heavy deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts, traditional lifting straps are a strong choice when the goal is to keep the posterior chain working after your grip begins to fatigue. They are especially useful during high-volume back or hinge sessions where your hands would otherwise end the set early.
Power grips can also work well for deadlifts, particularly if you prefer faster setup and release. The best option is the one that feels secure without restricting natural wrist position.
Which is better for HYROX carries?
For race-specific farmer’s carries, the priority is usually to develop and test your unassisted grip. Straps or power grips should not replace specific carry practice. Instead, use them strategically in strength sessions when grip fatigue would prevent you from training the larger target muscles or completing planned pulling volume.
For direct grip development, combine carries, timed holds and hangs. When sweat is the main problem rather than grip strength, Liquid Chalk can help increase friction while keeping the hands directly responsible for holding the implement.
When should you train without either?
If every pulling exercise is assisted, your grip has fewer opportunities to adapt. A practical approach is to complete warm-up sets and some working sets without assistance, then add straps or grips only when grip becomes the limiting factor for the training goal.
Simple decision rule
Choose lifting straps if you want a traditional wrapped connection for heavy pulling. Choose power grips if you value quick setup and an extended palm surface. Train without either when grip itself is the target.
If grip endurance is a recurring weakness across carries, sled work and pulling exercises, our personalized 4-week HYROX Grip Masterclass can structure the progression around your level and available equipment.
